How to Maximize Your Outdoor Living Space

How to Maximize Your Outdoor Living Space

No doubt about it, summers in Texas are hot … oftentimes too hot. With fall in full swing and the thermometer officially dropping, now is an ideal time to take advantage of your home’s outdoor space without having to worry about the blistering heat.

Whether it be for the upcoming holidays or just day-to-day family dinners, follow a few simple tips to ensure your space is ready to entertain guests and family alike.

Invest in Quality Furniture

To put it simply, no one is going to want to spend time outside if they are uncomfortable, and having quality and comfortable furniture can go a long way toward making this possible. Look for furniture made from heavy, durable materials that will not weather and can withstand regular cleaning. Newer synthetic materials have the look and feel of wood and other natural materials without the maintenance issues. In addition, purchase correctly fitting furniture covers to keep your furniture ready to go at a moment’s notice without extensive cleaning beforehand.

Outfit as if You Were Inside

If your outdoor space includes a grilling or food prep area, outfit the space as you would your inside kitchen. Buy or install a storage unit to keep separate sets of grilling utensils, serving dishes, and other food prep items handy and nearby. The convenience of not having to run inside will be appreciated, and having a fully stocked area allows hosts to interact and spend more time with guests.

Control the Temperature

Yes, the temperatures may be dropping, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be warm outside. Direct sun can often cause your outdoor space to be hotter than the ambient temperature and uncomfortable for guests. Ensure you have an umbrella or other shade producing element on hand in order to provide maximum comfort for guests. Conversely, heat lamps, a fire pit or fireplace can help to warm up a space and allow for use in colder temperatures. Ensure your space can be used when you want it, no matter the weather.

Light up the Night

Just because the sun goes down doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. The easiest way to extend the use of your outdoor space is by using it at night. A combination of landscape lighting and direct lighting over communal areas will offer the right balance of function and ambience. Also, aside from ambiance, outdoor lighting can also help to make your space safer for guests and your family, providing safety for walkways, staircases and grilling areas.

Don’t Forget the Technology

Just because you are relaxing outside doesn’t mean your space needs to be devoid of technology. A Bluetooth speaker system or hardwired outdoor sound system allows you to control music and set the tone of an event. Outdoor televisions and projectors are quickly becoming popular accessories as well, allowing you to further use your space for watching sporting events, movies, or as a second living room. Don’t forget about Wi-Fi either. If your space is far enough away from your home network, consider adding a range extender or router to allow guests to connect online. After all, it doesn’t count as a great party unless it gets shared on social networks.
